Leytonstone Methodist Church on the High Road has been the home of the Community Fridge since last summer, and they asked whether Transition Leytonstone would help them design and create a new garden at the front of the church. We suggested making four raised beds, to be planted with a mixture of shrubs, herbs and flowers, with an emphasis on diversity and benefits for wildlife.
On a cold day in December a group of us from Transition Leytonstone and the church positioned and filled the new beds and completed the first phase of planting.
So far we have put in a currant bush; a sweet box (sarcococca) for winter fragrance and berries; a hebe (fabulous for bees); and an evergreen prostanthera.
In the spring the next stage of planting will include herbs, foxgloves, primroses and lupins.
